What is the possibility that printers will shift to digital ptinting?I see some benefits to it like print on demand.Clients don't need to ptint excessively only what is needed and reprints are done easily as the first print.Problem is if it is viable for long print runs?

Digital Printing or digital Color press has a Monthly recommended volume. Example, A small printer has MRC is 30,000 pages of A4. You can not exceed or the printer will break down. These small one are capable of handling up to 250 gsm. Most Digital Printer(toner base) has fixing roller, transfer roller, you need to check always to maintain consistency also.
The Big ones like Xerox Igen3 and Canon Imagepress C7000 has a MRC of 300,000 to 500,000 A4 size. These are capable of handling up to 300 GSM paper. One of the most critical part of having a digital color press is supporting the color management system to ensure the quality accross the print, print to print ( in between and from first and last). Most vendor will likely oversell their products like capable of handling 350 gsm but if you look at the specs, its only up to 300 gsm. What I can suggest to you sir Luigi, is give them a sample of paper where all your prints you are intend to print to and a file that has a Big color gamut for you to know which one could give you the best. Another thing is, you should ask them about the Service Level Agrrement. Of course, who needs a downtime in this industry? Nobody!!

Cheers!Laughing

Some advantages of digital printing:
Customization or variable printing
on-demand
cheaper per page cost (on selected brands models)
better saturation than an offset 4-color print

Disadvantages are:
inconsistent color between jobs printed in different batch
limited resolution
limited substrates
only profitable if number of impressions is from short to mid-run
